At the March 17th meeting the Mayor and Township Committee issued proclaim to raise awareness about Autism as well as Alcoholism and to give a shout out to Middletown’s many volunteers.
Autism Awareness Month
The Mayor and Township Committee proclaimed April 2014 as Autism Awareness Month. Mayor Stephanie Murray was joined by Impact OASIS President Mya Cleary Brian Thorogood, Will Smith, Nicky Valentino, Tom Pontecorvo and Tim Koenigberg on Monday to make the announcement.
Middletown is home to the OASIS TRAIL Center, a transitional program for young adults on the autism spectrum. The OASIS TRAIL Center, is located off Sleepy Hollow Road. Residents of Middletown and neighboring towns who are on the autism spectrum and are finished with high school, between the ages of 18-27, are eligible The program is a four year vocational/ independent living program that will also offer continued instruction in social skills and language comprehension and usage. It is a farm setting and vocations are focused on agriculture, food and the environment. IMPACT Oasis also farms 3 acres at Stevenson Park, located off West Front Street. Alcohol Awareness Month
The Mayor and Township Committee also proclaimed April 2014 as Alcohol Awareness Month. The Middletown Township Committee joins the Middletown Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Substance Abuse in calling upon the community to support efforts that will increase community awareness, understanding and action to address underage drinking in our community. Alcohol remains a primary faction in the four leading causes of death for young person ages 10-21.
National Volunteer Week April 6-13, 2014
The Mayor and Township Committee proclaimed April 6-13, 2014 as National Volunteer Week and expressed their gratitude to hundreds of residents who volunteer their time to a wide variety of community programs, emergency service organizations including the all-volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services Department and nearly two dozen boards, committees and commissions.
