Volunteers and Hockey Players Among Those Recognized at March Meeting

An ice water rescue, a state hockey championship and amazing volunteer spirit were among the topics of conversation at the March Township Committee meeting.

Life Saving Awards were issued to First Aid members Jack Hueston and Roy Williams for rescuing a teenage girl from the icy waters of Sandy Hook Bay on February 17, 2015. EMS Director Eric Van Shaack, Roy Williams and Charmaine Hueston, who accepted the award on her husband’s behalf, participated in the presentation.

The Middletown High School North Hockey team was recognized by the Mayor and Township Committee for bringing home the team’s first state title. The team won the 2015 NJSIAA Public Group B State Hockey Championship earlier this month. The members of the team are:  Head Coach Matthew Clemente, Coach Donald Wood , Coach Anthony Decicco, Justin Skelly, Nicholas Kirch, Timothy Felice, Thomas Terranova, Nicholas Paterno, Khristian Acosta, Kevin Felice, Vincent Tomasetti, Ryan Davidson, Ryan Crane, Zachary Gazette, Kevin Stager, Bryan Colucci, Nicholas Dodd, Michael Corella, Jake Frontera, Robert Hampton, Anthony Manfredi, Kyle Goworek, Dylan Boniecki, John Dinnocenzo, Sean Crimmins, and Evan Hall.  

The governing body also proclaimed April 12-18, 2015 as National Volunteer Week in Middletown Township and expressed their gratitude to many residents who volunteer their time to a wide variety of community programs, emergency service organizations including the all-volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services Department and nearly two dozen boards, committees and commissions. Middletown Fire Department Chief Rick W. Hibell, Second Assistant Ryan Clarke, and Third Assistant Stephen Schweizer, EMS Director Eric Van Schaack and Volunteer Corps Member Anthony Panzica accepted the proclamation.

The Township Committee proclaimed April 2015 as Autism Awareness Month. The proclamation was presented to Bob Schear, Tom Pontecorvo, Nick Valentino, Will Smith, and Frank Schiumo Jr. and Brian Thorogood. They are students from the OASIS tlc TRAIL Center, a therapeutic life center for young adults on the autism spectrum. The center is located off Sleepy Hollow Road in Middletown.  Visit www.oasistlc.org for more information.

The Mayor and Township Committee also proclaimed April 2015 as Alcohol Awareness Month. The Middletown Township Committee joins the Middletown Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Substance Abuse in calling upon the community to support efforts that will increase community awareness, understanding and action to address underage drinking in our community. Alcohol remains a primary faction in the four leading causes of death for young person ages 10-21.
