Middletown Township is dedicating the third weekend in June to celebrating the township’s official founding 350 years in 1664. This jam-packed weekend features a formal gala, parade and burial of the Middletown 350 time capsule.

The festivities begin on Friday, June 20th at the Middletown 350 Anniversary Gala. This formal evening will be held from 7-11 pm at the Middletown Arts Center. Tickets are $85 and include two glasses of wine or beer, dinner, dancing, a preview of the Middletown 350 Time Capsule, casino tables, and more than more 30 prizes donated by local businesses. Tickets can be purchased at www.midletownarts.org or in person at the Middletown Arts Center, 36 Church Street. Call 732-706-4100 for details.

The Middletown 350 Parade and Time Capsule Celebration begins with a parade on Saturday, June 21 at 11 am at Middletown High School North, 63 Tindall Road. Hundreds of friends and neighbors will show their hometown pride by marching 1.6 miles along Tindall Road and across Route 35 into the oldest section of township, Middletown Village. The parade then continues along historic Kings Highway and down Church Street to Middletown Arts Center, 36 Church Street. On-line parade registration is closed. Call 732-615-2260 for information.

After the parade, a brief ceremony will be held on the lawn adjacent to the Middletown Arts Center to mark the burial of Middletown 350 Time Capsule. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes late morning and early afternoon.

The 50-year time capsule will be surrounded by an “Anniversary Plaza” designed with personalized bricks. Donors who purchase a brick will have their special message be part of this beautiful plaza for years to come and also will help the Middletown Arts Council continue its mission of bringing enriching arts programming to the community.   Those interested in purchasing a brick can download an order form at www.middletownarts.org or visit the Arts Center.

Whirl Construction is donating labor and equipment needed to install the plaza and assist with digging the hole for the time capsule. Marturano Recreation Company (MRC) is donating two benches that will be installed at Anniversary Plaza.

More than 1,000 people participated in the Middletown 350 Parade on Saturday, June 21, 2014. Sunny skies and cool breezes kissed the procession as they proudly marched from High School North on Tindall Road, across Road 35 to historic Kings Highway to Church Street. The parade ended at the Middletown Arts Center where the Middletown 350 Time Capsule was buried. It’s slated to be opened in 2064 for the township’s 400th anniversary in 2064.

“Where we congregate today is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in all of New Jersey, and one of the seats of colonial America, said Mayor Stephanie Murray at the Middletown Arts Center, where the time capsule was buried. “Hundreds of years later, here we stand, celebrating our rich heritage and prosperous town - sending our message of community pride and hope into the future. “

“There is something very special about this particular location where we are now gathered. For the Lenape, where our train station stands, there was the pow-wow field - a place where the tribe went to work out problems and settle issues. In the 1800’s, just up the street, on King’s Highway, the community held something called “training day.” Among other things, this was the day that all arguments were settled, debts paid, and the hungry were fed, “ explained Mayor Murray.

“And now, today, in 2014, we bury our time capsule, to be opened at our 400th anniversary in 2064. This area has been a hub for generations of Middletowners, a place where this town has come together time and time again, to affirm its commitment to the community and each other. And they did it right here - like we are – right now, the Mayor said. “

Some of the items included in the time capsule are: Letters to the Future from 2014 township officials to their 2064 counterparts, artwork and essays from our students, an iPhone, a windows phone, periodicals and magazines, the most circulated book of 2014 from our Library, a Ziploc bag full of contents from each school in town, an iPod, a DPW uniform, materials from our Police, Fire Dept, EMS, and OEM, a rainbow loom, a dvd player, a gas receipt, a k cup, a grocery bill, the township budget and of course, tons of pictures.

The parade included marching bands, floats, horses, dancers, civic, fraternal and youth groups, and Middletown schools. Participants included the current Township Committee, former Middletown Mayors, County Freeholders, Congressman Pallone, Senator Joseph Kyrillos, Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon, Red Bank Mayor Pat Menna, Naval Weapons Station Earle, Middletown Police, Fire, First Aid and Emergency Management, Patrick Torphy Pipe Band form the Ancient Order of Hiberians, American Legion Post 338, American Legion Post 515, Knights of Columbus Council 6552, Township of Middletown Sewerage Authority, Chapel Hill Hoof Beats 4H Club, Middletown Helps Its Own, Monmouth County Antique Motoring Club, Middletown Historic Preservation Commission, North Orange Wave Marching Band, Girl Scout Troop 991, Lincroft Elementary School and Girl Scout Troop 854, Middletown Village Elementary School, Thorne Middle School, Mater Dei Prep, St. Mary’s, Middletown South Band, and the Monmouth United Soccer Club.

At the close of the day, Thorne Middle School received the award for Best in Show and Perna Dance received the award for Best Theme Spirited Business.

Veterans Affairs Committee Brings Vet Center Services to Middletown

MIDDLETOWN –The Mobile Vet Center (MVC) of Lakewood, NJ offers weekly counseling and outreach services in Middletown Township. VFW Post 2179 located on Route 36 hosts the MVC in their parking lot on Thursdays, thanks to a partnership made possible through the Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee.

Vet Centers provide counseling services to combat veterans and veterans who experience sexual trauma while on active duty.  They can also provide services to the family members of these veterans as well as family members of those who have fallen while on active duty.  The MVC is staffed by a counselor and an outreach specialist. The MVC is located in Middletown on Thursdays.

“We are trying to bring services closer to the veterans,” says Daria Pampaloni, LCSW, Team Leader for the Lakewood Vet Center.  “We provide services to veterans in Monmouth and Ocean County but Lakewood can be a long trip if a veteran doesn’t have a car, or if they need to hire a babysitter.  We’re trying to bring the services closer to those who need us.”

Because the MVC is a multi-purpose vehicle, it will continue to fulfill its mission to provide outreach services at events around the state.  Post 2179 provides a private office so the counselor can continue to meet with veterans and their families if the mobile counseling center is not available on a Thursday. Interested veterans can contact 908-607-6364 to set up an appointment.

From left are: Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC) member Tom Garretson,  Vet Center Readjustment Counselor Charles Wuth, Middletown Mayor Stephanie Murray, VAC Chariman Jim D'Elia, Chairman, and Vet Center Technician Doris Rodriguezcorrea.

MIDDLETOWN – Middletown Township has given more than $1.2 million in federal grant monies to township residents whose homes were substantially damaged by Superstorm Sandy to help with living expenses.

Funding comes from the Superstorm Sandy Homeowner/Renter Assistance Program (SHRAP). The township is the only municipality in New Jersey that has applied and been approved to administer the SHRAP directly to its residents. Since the township begin processing applications earlier this year, 140 qualified households have received assistance.

Middletown received a $1.5 million slice of Monmouth County’s $9 million SHRAP allocation to assist homeowners struggling to recover from the historic storm. Middletown’s program is available to residents whose homes were determined be substantially damaged and that need assistance with housing-related expenses.

“I’m very glad the township received approval to administer the SHRAP to our residents who were hit so hard by Superstorm Sandy. The amount of funds expended so far clearly demonstrates the program is sorely needed here,” said Mayor Stephanie C. Murray. “We will continue to do everything we can to help our families recover from the storm.”

Qualified residents who applied to the program prior to June 30, 2014 may receive up to $15,000 in assistance. Allowable expenses include rent, mortgage, and utility payments, appliances, furniture and other necessary household items such as dishes and linens. The program is providing up to six months of housing and related assistance for households who have already applied to the program. Payments are not made directly to residents.

At this time the township cannot accept any new applications. The township has requested additional funding so that we can accept new applicants, said Township Administrator Anthony Mercantante.

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public educations tools, including posters, banners and mobile video display signs. Launched across the U.S. in 1999, the program works to combat drunk driving during the busy summer travel season, including the Labor Day holiday period.

“More than 10,000 people are killed in the United States each year in alcohol- impaired driving crashes. Drunk Driving is reckless and preventable,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “During this campaign police agencies in New jersey will be sending a clear message. If drivers are caught driving impaired they will be arrested.”

In 2013 alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 22 percent of New Jersey’s motor vehicle fatalities. As part of the initiative, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety provides grants to local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to run the two week campaign.

Law enforcement agencies participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2014 crackdown offer the following advice:

- If you plan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink alcohol, before going out.

- Take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive you home.

- Spend the night where the activity is held.

- Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. In New Jersey, drivers may dial #77 to report a drunk or aggressive driver.

- Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.

- If you’re intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive you to your doorstep.
